Low blood sugar detection and alert training

Dog Training by Southland - Call Today or Email us

Imagine...a familiar and dreaded scenario. It is 2am and your insulin-dependent child is beginning to experience another blood sugar low. Unfortunately his low has not sent a physical alarm so he doesn't begin to gyrate madly nor can he awaken himself. Additionally, not knowing, you don’t wake him up to administer the proper medicine, like a glass of milk or sugar gel. His liver kicks in (thankfully) and he wakes up the next morning feeling sick, nauseous and unable to function well until noon. It’s only his morning sugar reading that confirms what you suspect. His blood sugar went too low last night.

Imagine that same scenario...but this time you’re awakened before your child gets too low to eat. He is able to drink the milk & eat the peanut butter you brought. As you sit by his bed, thankful his blood sugar did not reach dangerously low levels you pet your dog's head and tell him "Good Boy!" If it had not been for your dog's incessant barking and pawing of your son when his blood sugar began to enter the low zone your family might have had to call 911.
