Service Dogs for Diabetics

Service Dogs for Diabetics - Photo by FelixCo, IncYou’ve probably seen specialized service dogs that assist those with disabilities; helping them to have some sense of normalcy in their lives. Southland Dog Training can help you or a loved one by training a specialized Diabetic Alert Dog that can help in the detection of low or high blood sugar for type-1 diabetes.

Diabetic alert dogs provide invaluable assistance. We can help train a pet to alert you or your love one to the onset of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

Diabetes detection dogs can be trained to:

  • Alert you when your blood sugar starts to drop not after it has plummeted.
  • Provide an active alert by barking, nudging, pawing or nibbling body parts
  • Continue the active alert until the proper action has been taken (Going into the fridge for juice)
  • Accompany you anywhere you go during the day and sleep in your room at night providing 24 hour protection

A diabetic service dog can even be trained to watch over children who suffer from juvenile diabetes. Parents of juvenile diabetics have to wake up 3 or 4 times a night to check in on their children. Once a diabetic alert dog has been trained to watch over a child a parent can have peace of mind and sleep better knowing their dog will alert them if their child’s blood sugar starts to drop.
